What Shunen-Iwai Means

Shunen-iwai (周年祝い, “anniversary celebration”) is fans celebrating milestones such as the debut date, the formation date, the date activities began or a work’s release date. Because a “5th anniversary of formation” and a “5th anniversary of debut” count from different days, a single oshi can have several milestones in one year. If the official side announces an anniversary, borrowing its way of counting is the surest approach.

What is being celebrated is not the person but “the activity that has continued,” which sets it apart from a seitansai, the birthday celebration, and from an oshi anniversary, which counts the day you personally fell for them. That’s why a longtime fan (kosan) and someone who joined yesterday can offer the same “congratulations.”

Origins and History

“Shunen” is an everyday word for counting yearly milestones from a starting point. In fandom, official starting points such as the debut date and formation date came to be shared as annual events, and the ways to celebrate branched out: anniversary streams, limited merchandise, and fan-led support ads and flower stands. Celebrations also tend to grow larger in years with a round number.

Examples

  • “The 10th-anniversary stream hasn’t even started and my timeline is already full of celebrations.”
  • “Every year I make the anniversary cake by hand. The one thing I never skip is the cream in my oshi’s color.”
  • “The debut anniversary and the formation anniversary fall on different dates, so I put both on my calendar.”
  • “For this year’s anniversary celebration, I decided to reread the official timeline from year one.”
  • “Congratulations on your 7th anniversary. I even remember the color of the sky on my way home the day I first saw you.”

Sorting Out the Milestones

NameThe day counting starts from
Debut anniversaryThe day activities officially began
Formation anniversaryThe day the group was put together
Launch anniversaryThe day the channel or account was opened
SeitansaiThe day the person was born
Oshi anniversaryThe day a fan personally started to love them

Even for the same “5th anniversary,” the day it points to moves depending on where you counted from. When dates look mismatched on the timeline, the cause is usually a difference in starting point. Rather than correcting each other’s numbers, it’s quicker to go check the official notation once.

Steps Until the Day

  1. Check the official way of counting first — Go through the timeline and past announcements to pin down which anniversary this year is
  2. Choose just one way to celebrate — Rewatch, listen, write, give. If you try to do everything, the day turns into a work day
  3. Count backward from the deadline for projects that involve money — For ads and flower arrangements, application deadlines, delivery methods and size limits are set first
  4. Allocate your time on the day — Overlapping an anniversary stream with a celebration post tends to leave both half-done

  2. One way to celebrateRewatch, listen, write or give
  3. Count backDeadlines for ads and flowers
  4. Plan the dayDon't overlap stream and post

If you try to do everything, the day turns into a work day.

What to Check for Physical Celebrations

If you photograph a cake or flowers, check before posting that the address on the shipping slip, the shop name and family members’ faces aren’t at the edge of the frame. If you build a saidan (fan altar) and photograph it, take a look at the view out the window in the background too.

Gifts and letters may have a designated reception window, so avoid sending them directly to a private home or workplace. If you celebrate by renting a shop, as in a birthday party without the person present, ask when you book how far you may decorate and what the restoration conditions are, and the day will run smoothly.

Squaring Your Budget With Your Feelings

An anniversary doesn’t mean you need to hold a lot of merchandise. Decide the ceiling you can spend that month first, and count participation fees, shipping and handling fees. Leaving one line in your oshi-katsu budget book makes next year’s decision much faster.

When you join a group project, keep the refund conditions and the handling of your listed name in writing. Write the recruitment text so that people who don’t take part don’t feel awkward. Not ranking different ways of celebrating is the best condition for ending an anniversary peacefully.

Notes From The Oshi Lab: A Demand Whose Date Can Be Read for Certain

Shunen-iwai has a rare quality as fan behavior. While birthdays and the day of graduation (leaving a group) face the person, what an anniversary faces is “time that continued unbroken.” So the length of your support history doesn’t become a ranking, and even someone on their third day as a fan can join the celebration in the same words. In what the Lab has observed, anniversary posts tend to come with a personal history, and lines like “this is what I was like that year” appear surprisingly often. At times it looks as if fans are borrowing their oshi’s timeline to check their own.

From the point of view of companies and operators, an anniversary is a demand once a year whose date can be read for certain. What will happen on the day is easy to predict, but if the facts fans refer to, namely the official timeline and easy access to early works, aren’t in order, the heat of the celebration has nowhere to go. Making past work watchable again and having the official side state the commemorative name clearly, just once: before any flashy measure, whether this groundwork is in place seems to decide the feel of that year’s anniversary.

FAQ

What is shunen-iwai?

It's fans celebrating a milestone such as a debut, a formation or a launch for their oshi or a favorite work. It takes many forms, from rewatching past work to joining an anniversary stream to writing down your thoughts, and how much you spend doesn't decide its value.

What do I do if I'm not sure which anniversary it is?

Check the official profile and past announcements, and if there are several notations, use the official way of counting. It's not unusual for an oshi to have two or three milestones in a year, with different starting points such as a debut date and a formation date.

Should I send an expensive gift?

There's no need. Gifts often have a designated reception window, so first find the method the official side accepts. A message within your budget, or celebrating by watching or attending, reaches them just as well.

I feel awkward if I can't join a group anniversary project.

The size of your feelings isn't measured by what you contribute or how many people take part. Listening to one song on the day or rewatching one early stream are small ways of celebrating, and they are properly kept in that year's record too.

What hashtag should I use for an anniversary post?

In years when the official side prepares a commemorative tag, using it brings posts together in one place. If there isn't one, look at the tags that have arisen naturally in the fandom and match them, and you won't disrupt search.
