JFA × J.League Estimates 5.73M More Viewers; Sho Sakurai Collab Outage (Aug 21, 2026)

Here is our roundup of notable corporate oshikatsu (fan-support activities) marketing and fan business news from the week of August 14 to August 20, 2026.

The complete edition covering all 19 stories is available on note in “Weekly Oshikatsu News: August 21, 2026 Issue (in Japanese).” This article is the highlight edition.

This Week’s Highlights

The key theme this week was redesigning sales methods, target audiences, and performance metrics to match fans’ actual enthusiasm.

In the collaboration between TENTIAL and Sho Sakurai, a surge of web traffic immediately after launch temporarily made every product on the brand’s official website impossible to purchase. Meanwhile, the Japan Football Association (JFA) and the J.League reported an estimated increase of approximately 5.73 million people watching the Japanese national team or the J.League over five months. What separated the outcomes was whether a system was in place to receive the fans who gathered and connect their enthusiasm to the next action.

Bandai changed the target age for its new Precure (Pretty Cure) figures to ages 15 and up to match the people actually buying them. Hakuhodo KEY3 began offering support to nurture individual shareholders into long-term fans. Across industries, companies increasingly prioritized the real profile of the fans right in front of them over their previously assumed customer personas.

Systems Capable of Receiving Fan Enthusiasm Created the Difference in Growth

TENTIAL × Sho Sakurai — Pre-Orders Suspended After Overwhelming Demand

TENTIAL launched a collaboration model of its “BAKUNE” recovery wear featuring Sho Sakurai at 7:00 p.m. on August 18. Immediately after sales opened, however, traffic far exceeding expectations flooded the site, temporarily making not only the collaboration items but every product on the official store unavailable for purchase. TENTIAL announced the suspension of pre-orders the next day, August 19, and announced plans to resume sales starting September 4 (AdverTimes. (in Japanese)).

Even when hiring a popular talent boosts purchase intent, that demand cannot turn into revenue if the store cannot process the orders of fans who arrive at the exact launch time. Beyond lost sales opportunities, the experience of wanting to buy an item but being unable to do so can also lead fans to lose trust in the brand.

The Oshi Lab Note: Products aimed at fans need to be engineered around how many people will arrive simultaneously right after launch, rather than normal everyday traffic levels. Sales methods, virtual waiting queues, made-to-order fulfillment, and outage communications should all be prepared as integral parts of the collaboration planning itself.

JFA × J.League — Viewing Audience Grew by Approximately 5.73 Million People

The JFA and the J.League rolled out the largest joint promotional campaign in their history, centered around the period of the FIFA World Cup 2026. According to the surveys, the estimated number of sports-interested people aged 15 to 69 who watched the Japanese national team or the J.League on broadcasts or in person grew from 10.71 million in February 2026 to 16.44 million in July. That represents an increase of approximately 5.73 million people (JFA (in Japanese)).

Among people who came into contact with the campaign’s advertisements, intent to watch was 3 times higher for Japanese national team matches and 3.6 times higher for J.League matches compared to people who had not seen the ads. The JFA and the J.League set a clear objective of channeling the heightened interest from the World Cup into the domestic league. On that basis, they measured the entire funnel continuously, from ad exposure to viewing intent and actual stadium attendance.

The Oshi Lab Note: To keep the excitement of a major event from ending as a one-off spike, it is vital to decide in advance where you want fans to go next. We also examine how the J.League has expanded its touchpoints with intellectual property (IP) in our guide to the J.League and oshikatsu.

Rebuilding the Relationship Between Products and Fans Around Actual Buyers

Precure — Target Age Shifted from Ages 3+ to Ages 15+

Bandai announced a new Precure figure series called “Star Gallery.” When the company analyzed buyers of previous series, it found that many of them were aged 15 and older. In response, Bandai changed the target age designation from “ages 3 and up” to “ages 15 and up.” It revised the size and sculptural detailing of the figures and raised the price of the standard retail version from around 700 yen to 2,500 yen per figure, excluding tax (Inside (in Japanese)).

Alongside the standard retail edition, Bandai also announced a Premium Bandai edition featuring additional paint application details. Rather than simply raising the price, the product line was designed to preserve distinct choices across quality and price points.

The Oshi Lab Note: When there is a gap between the originally assumed user and the actual buyer, companies should review age labels, pricing, product specifications, and retail sections together. The longer an IP’s history runs, the more room there is to serve the needs of adults who have supported the franchise since childhood.

Hakuhodo KEY3 — Turning Individual Shareholders into “Fanvestors”

On August 20, Hakuhodo KEY3 and Edge International launched their “Fanvestor Creation Solution,” a service designed to increase the number of individual shareholders and strengthen their loyalty to a company. Defining individual shareholders who hold stock over the long term out of empathy with a company’s business as “Fanvestors,” the partners combined investor relations (IR) and marketing methodologies to support corporate clients (PR TIMES (in Japanese)).

In fiscal year 2025, the cumulative number of individual shareholders across listed companies in Japan reached 91.98 million, an increase of 8.39 million from the previous fiscal year. This initiative reflects a growing movement to view not only people who buy products, but also people who support a company’s growth over the long term, as fans.

The Oshi Lab Note: Measuring fan relationships solely by purchase frequency captures only a fraction of how people support a brand. Redefining what counts as “supportive behavior” for your company—including holding shares, referring others, participating in events, and co-creating—is the first step toward designing long-lasting relationships.

Layering Oshikatsu Context onto Existing Venues to Create New Reasons to Visit

Oshicoco × Umeda Sky Building — Turning an Observation Deck into a Nuikatsu Photo Spot

Oshicoco teamed up with the Kuchu Teien Observatory at the Umeda Sky Building to run an oshikatsu photo spot called “Nui Tenkyu Summer” (Plushie Sky Palace Summer). In a space lined with power stones, the installation offered photo stations in a full range of seven colors so visitors could match their oshi color (the signature color of their favorite character or performer), along with “good-luck ema” (wooden wishing plaques). Dedicated sales areas for oshikatsu merchandise were also set up on the 39th and 40th floors (PR TIMES (in Japanese)).

By adding the specific purpose of “taking photos with my oshi plushie” (nuikatsu, plushie-centered fan photography and outings) to an observation deck built for viewing the city skyline, the organizers created a fresh reason to visit without making major structural changes to the facility itself.

The Oshi Lab Note: By adding oshi color options, photo stands, and related merchandise to a place where people already gather, an existing venue can be transformed into a destination where fans take photos and share them online. The key is designing the experience so that it does not end with taking a picture, but leads naturally into exploring the building and browsing retail counters. Our guide to enjoying nuikatsu offers additional context on this behavior.

Long-Nurtured IPs Drove Profit Growth in Toys and Hobby Products

Bandai Namco — Operating Profit Up 33.3%

In the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027, Bandai Namco Holdings recorded net sales of 328,494 million yen and operating profit of 69,204 million yen. Year over year, net sales rose 9.3% and operating profit climbed 33.3%, setting a new all-time record for a first quarter. At the center of this growth was the Toys and Hobby business (Branc (in Japanese)).

A broad lineup of products across long-nurtured evergreen IPs such as Gundam, DRAGON BALL, and ONE PIECE supported those profits. Even in an era when streaming and digital games continue to expand, demand for physical items that fans can keep close at hand remained strong.

The Oshi Lab Note: The value of an IP cannot be measured solely by sales at the moment a new title releases. When a company expands accessible products, price tiers, and item categories for each generation—building an assortment that fans can continue buying for years—that long-term relationship translates directly into profit.

As Numbers Grow, Rethinking Which Performance Metrics to Watch

YouTube — Public View Count Criteria Change Announced for August 24

YouTube announced that starting August 24, it would apply a new standard for public view counts across all videos. Under the new rule, a view is added to the count from the very first frame, the instant a video begins playing. Figures calculated under the previous standard would remain available in YouTube Analytics’ Advanced Mode as “engaged views.” YouTube announced that this change does not affect creator earnings or eligibility requirements for the YouTube Partner Program (AdverTimes. (in Japanese), K-tai Watch (in Japanese)).

Because public view counts are more likely to increase under the updated rule, simple week-over-week or month-over-month comparisons that cross August 24 risk misjudging the actual effectiveness of a marketing campaign.

The Oshi Lab Note: Whenever the definition of a metric changes, teams need to separate the effects of marketing initiatives from platform specification changes in their reporting. To measure whether fans truly kept watching, it is best to evaluate engaged views and watch time side by side with public view counts.

This Week’s Takeaways

A common thread across this week’s news was a move away from leaving fan presence as a vague notion of “popularity.” Companies are reframing fans through concrete indicators: web traffic volume, match viewers, buyer age demographics, share ownership, quarterly earnings, and video playback metrics.

The more clearly those numbers come into view, the better companies can adapt their systems to fit the reality of their fans. However, gathering numbers alone is not enough. As the TENTIAL case demonstrated, popularity only turns into lasting relationships and revenue once the underlying sales infrastructure is ready to receive fans’ enthusiasm.
