Disney and USJ: Designing Permanent Worlds and Limited-Time Fan Experiences
Tokyo Disney Resort and Universal Studios Japan (USJ) offer places to walk through a favorite fictional world, eat and shop within it. For businesses, a useful question is how permanent experiences combine with changes that give people a reason to return. Labeling one park as permanent and the other as temporary misses what both actually offer.
This article revisits a topic from The Oshi Lab’s Podcast Episode 49, “Disney vs. USJ: The Oshi-Katsu War” (Japanese audio), using official facility and event information. Park descriptions alone do not prove why a park is popular or how much a particular feature contributes to revenue. The analysis below offers questions for planning projects.
Separate the Operator From the Rights Holder
Oriental Land operates Tokyo Disney Resort under agreements with Disney. Its official 2018 announcement explains an extension of theme-park and related licensing agreements. The Japanese operator does not own all the Disney works used at the resort.
Likewise, USJ’s Super Nintendo World is based on Nintendo games. Distinguishing the company that creates a work from the company operating an on-site experience makes the comparison clearer.
Businesses planning collaborations must separately confirm rights-holder approval, venue operations, merchandise sales, photography and publicity permissions. Permission to use a popular work and the ability to keep delivering an experience consistent with it require different preparations.
- 01Rights holderConfirm what may be used
- 02Experience operatorPrepare the on-site activity
- 03Visitor guidanceExplain admission and conditions
Permission and reliable operations both need preparation.
Fantasy Springs: Connect Walking, Dining and Staying
The official Fantasy Springs site introduces three areas based on Frozen, Peter Pan and Tangled, together with a hotel at Tokyo DisneySea.
This official Tokyo Disney Resort video illustrates the scenery and expression of the stories. Information in the video may differ from current operating conditions.
The connection extends beyond displaying pictures of characters to buildings, landscapes, attractions and meals. Visitors have several ways to spend time within a story they love.
A smaller business can examine the same connections. At a collaboration café, for example, check whether entrance decorations, menus, merchandise and photography guidance reflect a consistent understanding of the work. This applies the principle at each visitor touchpoint without requiring a park-scale construction budget.
Super Nintendo World: Turn Game Actions Into Physical Play
USJ’s official Super Nintendo World information introduces attractions and activities such as Key Challenges using a Power-Up Band. It offers an example of connecting a familiar game world with physical play on site.
Nintendo’s official introduction, published in December 2020, shows the area’s original experience design. It is historical material rather than current merchandise or admission guidance.
A planning question is which memorable actions from a work participants can comfortably try. Searching around a venue, cooperating with friends and recording an achievement offer forms of participation beyond viewing a display. Explain the physical activity involved, waiting times and any required additional products before people attend.
Both Parks Combine Permanent Areas and Limited Runs
Tokyo Disney Resort also has seasonal events. Its official 2026 Disney Halloween page lists September 16–October 31. That event had ended by November.
USJ also layers anniversary programs onto a permanent area. The Super Nintendo World page lists its fifth-anniversary program for March 18, 2026–January 11, 2027. The continuation of the area and the ending of an anniversary program are different things.
| Planning question | Permanent experience | Limited-time or anniversary program |
|---|---|---|
| Promise to visitors | Provide a place to visit that world | Explain what is available during a specified period |
| Operating checks | Maintenance, operations and closure information | Opening and closing dates, stock, crowding and changes |
| Evaluation | Do visitors return or keep using it? | Does it bring new visits and later return visits? |
This is The Oshi Lab’s planning framework. It does not assign each park exclusively to one model or rank their revenue or visitor satisfaction.
Admission, Clothing and Photography Guidance Are Part of the Experience
Booking a trip does not necessarily ensure entry to the desired area. When checked on November 1, 2026, the official Fantasy Springs site said the area itself had no entry restriction; attractions offered standby queues and paid Disney Premier Access. USJ said Super Nintendo World could require an advance entry guarantee, Area Timed Entry Ticket or lottery ticket depending on conditions that day. Since January 5, 2026, timed-entry and lottery tickets have been issued through the official app only.
These conditions can change. Visitors need a clear route to official information before buying tickets. Organizers should explain admission, reservations and extra charges together to reduce misunderstandings about eligibility.
Costume permissions may also differ within an event’s run. The 2026 Tokyo Disney Resort full-costume guidance specified separate permitted periods. Before visiting, check Tokyo Disney Resort’s guest requests and USJ’s rules and manners for clothing, belongings and photography conditions. The linked guidance is in Japanese.
- 01Choose the experienceIdentify the intended activity
- 02Check entry requirementsReservations, apps and extra charges
- 03Prepare for the dayClothing, belongings and photography
Current official information takes priority over historical promotional videos.
Four Questions for Your Own Project
- Who will enjoy doing what? Choose the central action: photography, food, participatory play or something else.
- What stays and what changes? State what remains available after a limited program ends.
- Are extra costs and reservations clear? Explain necessary payments and procedures alongside the attraction of the project.
- What will help you improve it? Track waiting times, inquiries, return visits and written feedback as well as attendance.
Official videos and facility information show ways of connecting a work with visitors’ actions. To apply them at your scale, choose one touchpoint and check that the path from reservation to on-site guidance works smoothly.
