1AKB48 Theater | The Akihabara Home Base Staging Daily Performances

Illustration of the commercial building exterior housing the AKB48 Theater with a woman in the foreground

The AKB48 Theater opened on December 8, 2005 as the permanent home base embodying the concept of 'idols you can go to meet.' With just seven audience members in the seats on opening day, the group began its journey by performing day after day in Akihabara.

Following a comprehensive renovation in 2024, the theater reopened on December 8, 2024. Theater performances today use an advance lottery application system and electronic tickets via the official Ticket Center, with no general same-day ticket sales at the box office window.

The theater lobby also hosts seasonal member exhibitions. In October 2026, the 'Autumn Letters' (Aki no Tayori) display showcases handwritten notes by members about autumn foods they want to eat, songs they want to listen to, and goals for the rest of the year, scheduled through the final operating day of October.

Located on the 8th floor of the Don Quijote Akihabara building at 4-3-3 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, the theater is about a 5-minute walk from the Electric Town Exit of JR Akihabara Station.

The Two Pillars in the Auditorium and the Left and Right Hanamichi Runways

Inside the auditorium stand the theater's two signature structural pillars with seating arranged on both sides, flanked by stage-left and stage-right hanamichi runways and four standing-room sections at the rear. As performers step out from the main stage onto the side runways, their proximity to the audience shifts dynamically.

The layout of the seats, twin pillars, and runways is illustrated on the official theater seating chart, and the stage inside is experienced by winning a ticket to a scheduled performance.

2Kanda Myojin Shrine | Where Members Coming of Age Receive Blessings

Illustration of a man walking along the approach toward the vermilion gate of Kanda Myojin Shrine

Kanda Myojin is the Shinto shrine where AKB48 members have traditionally attended Coming-of-Age blessing ceremonies—including seven members in furisode kimono in 2011 and 15 AKB48 members alongside 4 SKE48 members on January 9, 2012.

On January 12, 2026, the 'AKB48 Gathering of Twenty-Year-Olds 2026' (Hatachi no Tsudoi) was likewise held at Kanda Myojin, continuing the shrine's role as the ceremonial landmark for each new generation reaching adulthood.

Six members participated in the 2026 ceremony, stepping out into the shrine courtyard in furisode kimono after receiving blessings inside the main hall and performing a celebratory sake-barrel opening (kagami-biraki). Because all six were born in the year AKB48 was founded, participant Yuna Akiyama described her cohort as the 'generation the exact same age as AKB48.'

Fellow participant Kasumi Kudo looked back on the previous month's 20th-anniversary Nippon Budokan concerts, speaking of both what she learned from watching graduated seniors perform and her determination to bridge the gap and carry the group forward into its third decade.

In addition to the main shrine pavilion, the precincts house exhibitions related to sacred treasures and festivals, and visitors can freely walk the same courtyard paths during regular shrine hours.

3Tokyo Dome | The Goal 1,830 Meters Away from the Akihabara Theater

Illustration of two women visiting the white roof and curved glass facade of Tokyo Dome

AKB48 held its first-ever Tokyo Dome concerts across three consecutive days from August 24 to 26, 2012. Naming the concert series '1830m no Yume' after the roughly 1,830-meter straight-line distance from the Akihabara theater to Tokyo Dome encapsulated the six and a half years it took the members and fans to walk that short geographical distance across central Tokyo.

Today, Tokyo Dome offers four guided tour courses—including backstage routes that take visitors into artist dressing rooms, bullpens, and ground-level areas—which can be booked in advance from the monthly schedule published on the official tour reservation page.

4Nippon Budokan | Where Six Concerts Were Staged Across Four Days for the 20th Anniversary

From December 4 to 7, 2025, AKB48 staged six concerts across four days at Nippon Budokan: the fan-voted Request Hour on December 4, evening 20th Anniversary Concerts on December 5, 6, and 7, and matinee national tour final concerts on December 6 and 7.

Bringing fan-voted songs, the 20th-anniversary celebration with graduated alumni, and the culmination of a nationwide tour together under one roof, all six concerts were re-streamed in March 2026 alongside a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Located in Kitanomaru Park, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Nippon Budokan's signature octagonal roof and exterior plaza can be viewed freely from the public park paths, while entering the arena hall requires a concert or event ticket.

5Agata-no-Mori Cultural Hall | The Historic School Building Where ‘Masaka no Confession’ Was Filmed

Illustration of two travelers walking in front of the wooden school building of Former Matsumoto High School in Agata-no-Mori Park

In Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, the Former Matsumoto High School campus served as the filming location for the 2025 music video 'Masaka no Confession.' Marking 18th-generation trainee Azuki Yagi's first time serving as single center, the video casts 16 members as high school drama club students preparing for a graduation after-party play.

Preserving its 1920 wooden main building and 1922 lecture hall (designated Important Cultural Properties) amid Himalayan cedar trees, the historic campus operates today as the Agata-no-Mori Cultural Hall, a municipal facility hosting community classes and rental rooms.

Located at 3-1-1 Agata, Matsumoto City, visitors can admire the building exterior from the park paths and tour school history exhibits inside the adjacent Former High School Memorial Museum (open 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, admission free, closed Mondays), while access to rooms inside the Cultural Hall depends on scheduled community use.

In Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, Bannaji Temple served as one of the filming locations for the 2013 music video 'Suzukake Nanchara,' centered by Janken Tournament winner Jurina Matsui and depicting a 10-year class reunion of former schoolmates.

Founded in 1196 by Yoshikane Ashikaga as a private worship hall within his fortified residence, the temple's National Treasure Main Hall can be viewed from the open approach and precincts, while interior access to halls such as the Issaikyodo is offered on designated Sundays and holidays.

Filmed on location in June 2013, the original music video for 'Koisuru Fortune Cookie' used the roadway directly in front of what was then Fukuoka Yahoo! Auctions Dome—known today as Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka.

Directed by Kosai Sekine, the shoot mobilized roughly 4,000 citizen extras, temporarily closing the road and sidewalks outside the dome so thousands of participants of all ages could dance the choreography together.

Visitors today can walk the public sidewalks along the perimeter road in 2-chome Jigyohama, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City (the dome sits at 2-2-2 Jigyohama, about a 15-minute walk from Tojinmachi Subway Station) to view the roadway and dome facade.

Yanagibashi Rengo Market in Haruyoshi, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, also appears in the original 'Koisuru Fortune Cookie' music video, pairing the mass street dance outside the dome with lively everyday scenes inside a working food market.

Known affectionately as Hakata's kitchen, the covered market arcade brings together fresh fishmongers, produce stalls, traditional confectioners, and eateries where visitors can shop face to face; most stalls open around 8:00 until late afternoon and close on Sundays and holidays.

Located a 3-minute walk from Watanabe-dori Subway Station or a 1-minute walk from the Yanagibashi bus stop, visitors can consult the market cooperative's official stall map when browsing.

Deeper into AKB48 | From Intimate Theater Shows to Stadiums and Arenas

Here we trace how the intimate Akihabara theater and the vast Tokyo Dome connect across AKB48's two-decade history—following the group from its seven-person opening night to its 20th-anniversary Budokan concerts and location music videos.

December 8, 2005: A Theater That Began with Seven Audience Members

AKB48's home base is its dedicated theater on the eighth floor in Akihabara. Following first-generation auditions launched in July 2005, the group staged its inaugural performance on December 8, 2005 before an independent audience of seven people.

Built around a permanent theater where fans could watch live stages up close, the group released its independent debut single 'Sakura no Hanabiratachi' in February 2006, made its major-label debut with 'Aitakatta' in October 2006, and reached its 1,000th theater performance on May 26, 2008.

‘1830m no Yume’ | From the Dedicated Theater to Tokyo Dome

From August 24 to 26, 2012, AKB48 headlined Tokyo Dome for three consecutive days under the title '1830m no Yume,' referencing the exact distance from the Akihabara theater to the dome.

On the first night, August 24, the group announced a major team reshuffle ('Sokaku') reorganizing members into Teams A, K, and B of 16 theater performers each and appointing Minami Takahashi as the first General Manager (Soukantoku) of the entire 48 Group. Standing on the massive dome stage they had long dreamed of, the members simultaneously received the team lineup for their next theater performances.

The final night, August 26, also served as the farewell dome stage for graduating center Atsuko Maeda, who sang 'Yume no Kawa' in a white gown alongside nine peers before departing aboard a boat across the arena floor while early archival footage played on the giant screens, followed by a 245-member performance of 'Heavy Rotation.'

2025 at Nippon Budokan | Graduated Legends’ Signature Hits Alongside Current Theater Songs

Each night of the December 2025 20th-anniversary run at Nippon Budokan featured distinct guest alumni and setlists. The December 5 evening concert opened with graduated member Mariko Shinoda centering 'Ue kara Mariko' alongside current members performing the 2025 single 'Masaka no Confession' and 'Doncho wo Agete Kure!' from the new theater stage 'Koko kara da'—lining up historic hits and present-day theater numbers on the same evening stage.

The December 6 evening concert kicked off with Minami Takahashi's signature call on 'RIVER' and placed 'Koisuru Fortune Cookie' in the encore—uniting graduated alumni and active members on a song whose original music video had been filmed with thousands of citizens in Fukuoka twelve years earlier.

The final night on December 7 opened with Atsuko Maeda singing 'Sakura no Ki ni Narou' solo before being joined on stage by Minami Takahashi, Tomomi Itano, Haruna Kojima, Mariko Shinoda, and Minami Minegishi, and concluded with a double encore where the current members voiced their resolve to lead the next chapter.

The Renovated Theater and the New Original Stage ‘Koko kara da’

On December 8, 2024, the newly renovated AKB48 Theater reopened with the premiere of its 18th original stage production, 'Koko kara da' ('It Starts From Here'), newly written by producer Yasushi Akimoto as the theater's first all-new original stage in roughly nine years.

To create the new production, Akimoto listened to more than 1,000 demo candidates before selecting and writing 16 songs—running from the opening 'overture 2.0' and the title track 'Koko kara da' through 'Gekijo e Yokoso!,' the solo number '2-gatsu no Mermaid,' and the closing song 'Hungry love.'

Performing in front of a newly installed stage-backdrop LED wall on opening night, 16 members debuted the show, with Azuki Yagi singing the solo '2-gatsu no Mermaid.' Choreography rehearsals for opening day had begun roughly a month earlier, and the members stepped inside the theater under renovation for the first time on December 2.

Near the end of the setlist, 'Doncho wo Agete Kure!' ('Raise the Stage Curtain!') features choreography by singer and dancer Riho Sayashi—marking Sayashi's first time creating choreography for another artist, after which she visited the theater in person to watch the members dance it on stage.

In 2025, the opening-night cast recorded a studio album of the 'Koko kara da' songs, while the theater also stages other productions such as 'RESET' so visitors can check the performance calendar for each show.

On December 8, 2025—the day after concluding the four-day Nippon Budokan run—the group returned to the Akihabara theater for a 20th Anniversary Special Commemorative Performance, staging its inaugural setlist 'PARTY ga Hajimaru yo' at its home base and uniting first-generation alumni with current members to sing their debut single 'Sakura no Hanabiratachi.'

Town-Wide Mass Choreography and High School Drama Filmed in a Historic Campus

Filmed on location in Fukuoka in June 2013 under director Kosai Sekine, the original music video for 'Koisuru Fortune Cookie' received filming cooperation not only from the dome perimeter road and Yanagibashi Rengo Market, but also from Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University and Higashi Fukuoka High School.

Produced with the participation of AOI Pro., the video brought thousands of extras dancing in the street together with everyday shoppers in the market, and after its release it inspired official staff versions as well as regional government dance videos such as the Kanagawa Prefecture edition.

Choreographer Papaiya Suzuki conceived the signature opening hand gesture—later nicknamed the 'onigiri (rice ball) dance'—even before hearing the final song while thinking about how best to showcase center Rino Sashihara.

Shaping the overall choreography to incorporate classic soul-dance steps that people of every generation could enjoy, Suzuki taught the hand motion to the members by asking them to imagine polishing an apple—a visual cue passed directly from choreographer to members that spread from the Fukuoka roadway across Japan.

Azuki Yagi’s First Center Song | An MV Moving Between a Real School Building and Stage Sets

For the 65th single 'Masaka no Confession' in 2025, 18th-generation trainee Azuki Yagi served as center for the first time in a music video directed by Dai Ikeda.

Portraying 16 high school drama club members in a story about being unexpectedly plucked for the lead role at a graduation after-party, the video moves back and forth between real wooden classrooms at Former Matsumoto High School and school life performed atop theatrical stage sets.

Choreographed by Acchan—who also choreographed the theater stage songs 'Ren'ai Cunning' and 'Cyclamen ga Saku Koro,' linking theater stage choreography with the historic schoolhouse shoot—the routine features a signature move Yagi dubbed the 'pulling up vegetables pose.' The MV premiered on March 8, 2025 ahead of the single's April 2 release.

Lab Note | From a Business Perspective: Pairing a Daily Home Theater with Milestone Arenas

AKB48's story links an eighth-floor theater in Akihabara where shows are staged almost daily with milestone concerts at Tokyo Dome and Nippon Budokan. Tracing the exact dates, election milestones, and concert titles that bridged those 1,830 meters gives visitors a concrete narrative when standing outside the Don Quijote building in Sotokanda or approaching the gates of Tokyo Dome and Kitanomaru Park.

In parallel, music videos filmed in Fukuoka's market and coastal streets, Ashikaga's quiet neighborhoods, or Matsumoto's preserved wooden schoolhouse connect the group's discography to real regional towns across Japan. Distinguishing between one-day special filming road closures and present-day market, school, or museum operating hours helps fans enjoy each location respectfully while appreciating the local communities that welcomed the shoots.
