Southern All Stars Pilgrimage Guide: 9 Locations in Chigasaki, Yokohama & Enoshima Tied to Songs & Film

Walk down Southern Street from the south exit of Chigasaki Station toward the ocean, and you arrive at Southern Beach Chigasaki, where the C-shaped seaside monument 'Chigasaki Southern C'—featured on a Southern All Stars CD jacket—stands against the open horizon. Framed right in the center of its ring is Eboshi Rock floating offshore. Visiting Chigasaki through the music of Southern All Stars lets you trace the decades shared between the band and the coastal town along both the station shopping street and the sandy shoreline.

Just back from the beach, Chigasaki Park Baseball Stadium has hosted the hometown concert series 'Chigasaki Live' on three occasions—in 2000, 2013, and 2023. This guide traces the four-day 2023 concerts, the musical fireworks events launched over the coast in sync with the band's catalog, and how 'Kibou no Wadachi' came to be adopted as the departure melody on JR Chigasaki Station's platforms. Beyond Chigasaki, we also visit nine real-world locations tied to the band's songs and film: Inamuragasaki in Kamakura (the setting of the Keisuke Kuwata-directed film Inamura Jane), the Yokohama cruise ship and historic hotel bar immortalized in 'LOVE AFFAIR ~Himitsu no Date~,' Rachi-en Street in Chigasaki, and Enoshima, named in their 1978 debut single.

1Southern Street: The Shopping Street Leading from the Station to Southern Beach

Illustration of two women walking along Southern Street

Stretching from the Twin Wave pedestrian deck at Chigasaki Station's south exit all the way down to Southern Beach, Southern Street is lined with local shops carrying items inspired by the band's name and draws visiting fans from across Japan. Because the shopping street runs a long distance from north to south between the station and the ocean, the map pin is placed near the south exit of Chigasaki Station as a starting landmark.

Walking with the illustrated guide map published by the Southern Street Shopping Association makes it easy to spot individual stores along the avenue. Stopping for lunch or browsing shopfront displays on your way toward the ocean breeze is a signature part of experiencing Southern Street.

Picking Out Chigasaki Specialties at Local Shopping Street Stores

When looking for souvenirs along Southern Street, take time to browse the original items crafted by individual merchants—such as original tin badges at Cues Plaza, filter-in cold-brew tea bottles at Tea Merchant Kobayashien, and 'Southern Shrine Charm Straps.'

In addition, the specialty shop KUWATAYA carries Chigasaki souvenirs including keychains, everyday sundries, and local T-shirts. When shopping along the street, check each store's official listing for current items and stock availability.

Tea Merchant Kobayashien also blends a specialty green tea named 'Chazan'—a playful combination of 'Southern' and tea—in honor of Chigasaki-born vocalist Keisuke Kuwata. Shoppers can choose from three distinct varieties: powdered green tea with matcha, deep-steamed sencha green tea with matcha, and celebratory deep-steamed green tea with matcha and gold leaf.

At Etoile Confectionery, 'Southern Sablé' shortbread cookies are baked in the distinctive silhouette of offshore Eboshi Rock. Their three flavors—vanilla, salt, and cinnamon—were created to celebrate Chigasaki's 'Three Southerns': Southern Beach, Southern C, and Southern Street. Local teas and baked confections like these make memorable souvenirs you can continue enjoying after returning home.

2Southern C: The Seaside Symbol Framing the Ocean and Eboshi Rock

Illustration of two people looking at Eboshi-iwa through the ring of the Southern C monument on Southern Beach Chigasaki

Chigasaki Southern C is a circular seaside monument standing on the eastern side of Southern Beach Chigasaki. Featured on the cover jacket of a Southern All Stars CD, its C-shaped silhouette stands out vividly against the backdrop of the sea along the wide sandy beach. The initial 'C' stands for Chigasaki, and looking straight through the center of the ring frames offshore Eboshi Rock on the horizon.

Completed on March 3, 2002, the monument's design was selected by a municipal construction review committee from 32 public design submissions, while its affectionate nickname 'Chigasaki Southern C' was chosen by a naming committee from 232 public entries. Crafted of durable titanium, the ring measures 3.5 meters in diameter and 50 centimeters thick, weighing approximately 400 kilograms.

Its design embodies local wishes for matchmaking bonds as well as prayers for maritime safety and lasting peace. Framing Eboshi Rock right in the center of the ring was built into the sightline from the very beginning, and when a visitor stands in the gap on the right side of the 'C,' the C-shape visually completes a full circle.

In 1999, the municipal swimming beach where the monument stands was officially renamed 'Southern Beach Chigasaki.' From the sandy shoreline, visitors can look out toward Enoshima to the east, Mount Fuji to the west, and Eboshi Rock straight ahead across the waves.

Keep in mind that strolling along the sandy shoreline and swimming during the official summer beach season follow separate schedules. In 2026, the official swimming beach and beach houses operated from July 4 through August 31. If you plan to swim in summer, verify that year's official opening dates, weather advisories, and beach rules before heading out.

Floating roughly 1.4 kilometers offshore straight ahead of the beach, Eboshi Rock (formally Ubashima) is an approximately 15-meter-tall reef named for its resemblance to the traditional eboshi court headwear worn by Heian-period nobles. Sightseeing boats depart from nearby Chigasaki Fishing Port for an approximately 40-minute cruise around the reef, allowing passengers to see the rock formation up close from the water. Be sure to check the boat operator's conditions and same-day sea state in advance before boarding.

Souvenirs Modeled After Southern C and Eboshi Rock

Through the Chigasaki City Tourism Association's official online shop, visitors can purchase stickers, reusable bottles, canvas tote bags, and ceramic accessories featuring Southern C and Eboshi Rock motifs. Distinct from official band tour merchandise bearing the group's logo, these local items are popular keepsakes celebrating the coastal symbols of Chigasaki itself.

These Chigasaki souvenirs and Southern Beach goods are also carried in person at the Chigasaki Station Tourist Information Center inside the station concourse. Because the center also stocks walking maps, city brochures, and seasonal event flyers, stop by upon arriving at the station to check the current merchandise lineup.

3Chigasaki Park Baseball Stadium: Memories of the Four-Day Live Concerts in 2023

Illustration of a man and woman outside the spectator stand structure of Chigasaki Park Baseball Stadium

Chigasaki Park Baseball Stadium served as the outdoor concert venue for 'Chigasaki Live 2023.' Staged across four days on September 27, 28, and 30 and October 1, 2023, the concerts marked the band's third hometown Chigasaki Live engagement—and their first in 10 years since 2013—drawing approximately 70,000 fans to the seaside ballpark.

In everyday operation, the stadium is run as a municipal sports facility for local citizens and amateur baseball games. When visiting the site at 3-3-11 Nakakaigan, check in advance which outer park pathways are open to visitors and whether athletic matches are underway. The full stage performances from the 2023 concerts can also be relived on the official home video release launched on March 20, 2024.

4Chigasaki Station: ‘Kibou no Wadachi’ as the Tokaido Line Departure Melody

Illustration of a man looking up at the Chigasaki Station building

Since October 2014, the Tokaido Line platforms at JR Chigasaki Station have used 'Kibou no Wadachi' as their train departure melody. Inspired by vocalist Keisuke Kuwata's hometown roots in Chigasaki, the Youth Division of the Chigasaki Chamber of Commerce and Industry spearheaded a community petition campaign that gathered over 10,000 signatures in six months to bring the melody to the station.

5Inamuragasaki: The Setting of the Film Inamura Jane Directed by Keisuke Kuwata

Illustration of two women looking out at the sea from Inamuragasaki

Directed by vocalist Keisuke Kuwata, the 1990 theatrical film Inamura Jane is set in the summer of 1965 in Inamuragasaki, Kamakura. 'Kibou no Wadachi'—now heard every day as JR Chigasaki Station's departure melody—was born directly out of the production of this film, originating from the question of what kind of music should play over a scene being edited in which a three-wheeled Daihatsu Midget micro-truck drives along the coastal road.

Released on September 1, 1990, Inamura Jane serves as both Southern All Stars' 10th original studio album and the soundtrack album to the film of the same name. Featuring 'Kibou no Wadachi' as track 2 and the film's hit theme ballad 'Manatsu no Kajitsu' as track 6, the record also incorporates Latin rhythms and Spanish-language songs suited to the movie's 1965 setting, credited on the album jacket to 'SOUTHERN ALL STARS and ALL STARS.'

To look out over the ocean on location in Kamakura, head to the Inamuragasaki district of Kamakura Seaside Park (1-19 Inamuragasaki, Kamakura), a five-minute walk from Inamuragasaki Station on the Enoden Line. Featuring an open grassy lawn and a hilltop observation point shaped around the natural cape, the park offers sweeping views of Enoshima, Mount Fuji, and even Izu Oshima across Sagami Bay on clear days.

6Marine Rouge: Cruising Yokohama Port on the Ship from ‘LOVE AFFAIR’

Illustration looking out over the Pier Aka-Renga dock and Yokohama Port

The lyrics of the 1998 hit single 'LOVE AFFAIR ~Himitsu no Date~' famously name the Yokohama cruise ship Marine Rouge. Still operating today as a sightseeing restaurant cruiser touring Yokohama Port, the vessel allows visitors to enjoy a harbor cruise and meal while taking in views of the Yokohama waterfront.

Passenger boarding takes place at 'Pier Aka-Renga,' located on the harbor side of Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No. 1. Guests can choose from a 60-minute Tea Cruise, a 90-minute Twilight Cruise, or a 120-minute Dinner Cruise depending on the time of day they wish to spend on the water. Always check sailing schedules, seat availability, and dining plans with the operating company when making a reservation.

8Rachi-en Street: Tracing the Street Name from ‘Rachi-en Doori no Sister’

Illustration visiting Matsugaoka Rachi-en Street Park

'Rachi-en Doori no Sister' is a beloved early track included on the band's 1979 album 10 Numbers Carat. The Rachi-en Street named in the title is a real north–south road running toward the sea on the east side of Chigasaki Station. Offering a quieter residential neighborhood atmosphere than the bustling Southern Street shopping district in front of the station, visitors can use Matsugaoka Rachi-en Street Park along the road as a starting landmark to stroll through Chigasaki with the song title in mind.

9Enoshima: The Island Named in the Debut Single ‘Katte ni Sindbad’

Illustration looking out over the Shonan sea and Enoshima

Released in June 1978, the band's debut single 'Katte ni Sindbad' famously sings of Enoshima alongside Chigasaki and the Shonan coast. After viewing the silhouette of Enoshima from afar along Chigasaki's beach or the cape at Inamuragasaki, you can extend your pilgrimage across the bridge onto the island itself.

Walking across the pedestrian walkway of Enoshima Benten Bridge connecting Katase Coast with the island brings you directly to Enoshima Benzaiten Nakamise Street, where seafood restaurants and souvenir shops line the rising approach at the island's entrance. Viewing the island sung about in the lyrics from the mainland shore and then crossing the bridge to browse the Nakamise shops makes for a rewarding Shonan coastal walk.

The 2000, 2013, and 2023 Chigasaki Live Concerts and Art Fireworks

The very first Chigasaki Live took place at Chigasaki Park Baseball Stadium on August 19 and 20, 2000, followed 13 years later by a second hometown engagement at the exact same stadium on August 31 and September 1, 2013. Then, in autumn 2023, the band returned to the ballpark for their third Chigasaki Live—and first in 10 years—staged across four days.

50,000 Signatures for a Hometown Concert and the Citizen’s Honor Award

The inaugural Chigasaki Live in August 2000 was also brought to fruition through a grassroots campaign led by local citizens. Responding to Chigasaki native Keisuke Kuwata's long-held wish to stage a concert in his hometown, local residents collected 50,000 signatures—a citywide effort that rallied the community behind the outdoor concert years before the later petition campaign that brought 'Kibou no Wadachi' to JR Chigasaki Station's platforms.

In 2013, the year of the second Chigasaki concerts, the city decided on July 31 to present Keisuke Kuwata with the Chigasaki Citizen's Honor Award, recognizing his decades of achievements in composing music across rock, ballads, hip-hop, and local folk styles while spreading Chigasaki's name across Japan.

2018 Art Fireworks: Hometown Celebration and the Next Morning’s Beach Cleanup

Held on October 27, 2018, the Chigasaki Southern Art Fireworks grew out of local citizens' desire to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary in their hometown, with the Chigasaki City Tourism Association, event organizers, and community groups forming an executive committee to support operations.

On the night of the event, fireworks were launched into the autumn sky in computer-synchronized choreography with 13 Southern All Stars songs—including 'Katte ni Sindbad' and 'HOTEL PACIFIC'—as roughly 35,000 spectators gathered along the beach for an hour-long display of music and light.

Early the following morning, approximately 330 volunteers took part in a community beach cleanup dubbed 'The World's Most Fun Trash Pickup.' Groups picking up litter along the streets on their way from the station toward the sea met up on the sand with volunteers starting from the shoreline, restoring the town with their own hands after the festival.

Marking the band's 45th anniversary on October 21, 2023, the special event 'Chigasaki Southern Art Fireworks 2023' once again lit up the autumn night sky in synchronization with Southern All Stars' music. 1985’s Double Album KAMAKURA and the 1988 Grand Comeback Tour

Released in September 1985, KAMAKURA was Southern All Stars' first double album, recorded over roughly 1,800 studio hours starting that March. That autumn, the band also held an eight-show nationwide joint tour alongside the African musical group Touré Kunda.

On June 25, 1988, marking the 10th anniversary of their debut, the band released 'Minna no Uta,' their first single in about three years, followed by the summer stadium tour 'Midsummer Night's Dream: 1988 Grand Comeback Festival,' which drew 500,000 fans across 20 shows at nine baseball stadiums nationwide starting at Seibu Stadium.

In July 1996, the band released Young Love, their first original studio album in four years, incorporating rap rhythms on 'Ai no Kotodama ~Spiritual Message~' and featuring a lush orchestral arrangement by maestro Hiroshi Miyagawa on the closing track 'Kokoro wo Komete Hanataba wo.'

That summer they staged a 15-show outdoor stadium tour across eight locations from Hokkaido to Okinawa, including their first Okinawa concert in 17 years—demonstrating how the band had already built a rich history of major outdoor stadium tours across Japan well before holding their first hometown concert in Chigasaki in 2000.

Comparing the 2000, 2013, and 2023 Chigasaki Setlists

At the inaugural Chigasaki Live in August 2000, songs tied to the 1990 film Inamura Jane were performed alongside brand-new hit singles released earlier that same year—'TSUNAMI' (released January 26, 2000) and 'HOTEL PACIFIC' (released July 19, 2000)—forming a setlist that defined the band's very first hometown concerts.

The 2000 concert opened with 'Kibou no Wadachi,' followed by 'Inase na Locomotion' and 'Minna no Uta,' before 'Chigasaki ni Se wo Mukete' was played fourth right after the opening MC greeting. The middle section lined up classic Shonan coastal songs including 'Umi,' 'Natsu wo Akiramete,' and 'Chako no Kaigan Monogatari.'

The second half of the main set built to a climax with 'Manatsu no Kajitsu,' 'TSUNAMI,' and 'HOTEL PACIFIC,' while the four-song encore kicked off with 'LOVE AFFAIR ~Himitsu no Date~,' continued into 'Itoshi no Ellie,' and closed warmly with 'Kokoro wo Komete Hanataba wo.'

By contrast, the 2013 home video release separates the Chigasaki concert recording and highlights from the nationwide stadium tour onto dedicated discs, with the 34-song nationwide tour disc including 'Umi' from the opening night at Nissan Stadium and 'Aobajo Koiuta' sung on the final night at Miyagi Stadium.

The 2013 Chigasaki concert opened with 'Ya Ya (Ano Jidai wo Wasurenai)' and continued into 'My Foreplay Music,' 'Katte ni Sindbad,' and 'YOU.' Near the end of the 32-song set came 'Rock'n'Roll Superman,' 'HOTEL PACIFIC,' 'Itoshi no Ellie,' and 'Kibou no Wadachi'—placing 'Kibou no Wadachi,' which had opened the 2000 concert, in the grand finale position.

Hearing the New 2023 Songs Live in Chigasaki

Nor was the 2023 Chigasaki Live merely a retrospective of older hits: the brand-new summer 2023 singles 'Utae Nippon no Sora' and 'Bongiri Koiuta' were woven into the set at slots 12 and 20 before leading into the closing pairing of 'Kibou no Wadachi' and 'Katte ni Sindbad.'

Released on August 2, 2023, 'Utae Nippon no Sora' carries heartfelt gratitude toward their hometown of Chigasaki, Victor Studio where the band has recorded for decades, and the towns across Japan visited on tour, set to a breezy seaside Latin groove. Listeners who want to follow the concert running order can also stream the official 'Chigasaki Live 2023' setlist playlist across major music streaming services.

Lab Note | From a Business Perspective: Local Shops and Scenery Visitors Can Enjoy on Non-Concert Days

In Chigasaki, connections to the band live on not only at the Chigasaki Park Baseball Stadium concert venue, but also along the Southern Street shopping district, at the seaside Southern C monument, and in the station's daily departure melody. Because local merchants also craft their own original Chigasaki souvenirs, visitors can enjoy shopping and coastal walks even on ordinary days when no concert is taking place.

Maintaining local shops and coastal landmarks that fans can enjoy year-round outside concert dates offers a valuable model for music-inspired regional tourism. Fans who visit after watching live concert footage can shop along the street and walk the beach to take in the atmosphere of the songs—while clear labeling that distinguishes official band merchandise from locally produced town souvenirs helps every visitor choose items suited to their trip.
